Preserving Saskatoons & Recipe Links

How we use our Saskatoons

We freeze our saskatoons straight from the field to the freezer in our 4-litre pails. Some we wash before freezing. By giving the pail a hearty shake, once frozen, we can easily scoop out an amount of berries needed for an individual recipe. If the berries were frozen without washing, now is the time to wash them. After draining or blotting with a paper towel, they're ready to use.

Saskatoon Measures and Equivalents

1 4-litre pail fresh saskatoons equals approximately 3-4kg/6-8pounds.

It takes 4 to 6 cups of Saskatoons to make a pie, most muffin recipes call for 1 to 2 cups of berries.

Saskatoon berry baking tips

Fruit Growers Society of Alberta

  • Use almond extract in recipes to bring out the nutty saskatoon flavour.
  • Do not thaw berries before using. Wash in the frozen state and then proceed with the recipe.
  • Never boil saskatoons with sugar. Saskatoon skin will become hard and tough. Add the "boiled without sugar" berries at the end of the recipe.
  • Add something acidic to your recipes to bring out the saskatoon flavour, e.g., lemon juice or rind, rhubarb, sour cherries, etc.
