The U-Pick is finished for 2008.  Thank you to all our customers for coming out.

I found a great new recipe for Saskatoon Pudding Cake.  It was a little too sweet for us.  The second time we made it, we reduced the sugar to half a cup in the cake portion and to one-quarter cup in the topping portion.  This recipe was quick, easy and oh-so-delicious!

Due to a crop failure, we will NOT be picking any cherries in 2008.

Further down this page is information on:

Prices 2009

2009 prices will be listed here when they are determined.

Hours 2009

2009 hours will be listed here when they are determined.

Note: These hours may change for several reasons as the picking season progresses.

Always call the farm immediately before you head out!  There may have been a severe weather event, sudden illness or injury, a plethora of enthusiastic pickers, or some other event causing us to temporarily suspend opertations.

If you haven't picked Saskatoons or Cherries before, the season will unfold something like this.  The berries won't be ready, until suddenly, they will.  It can literally happen overnight.  We'll be thinking we still have a few days to go and one morning they will be ready for picking.  Once picking begins, we have about a week to get them picked.

Due to a crop failure, we will NOT be picking any cherries in 2008.

Picking Containers

Our fruit price is based on 4-litre pail units (ice-cream pails).  If you don't have a 4-litre pail, we will sell you a pail for one dollar.

However, you don't need pails of your own to pick fruit.  You may use one of our pails for picking and check-out.  To transport your fruit home, you can pour the fruit into whatever container you like.

See the Picking Information page for more details on the picking season and our farm amenities.

Recyle, Reuse, Re-purpose

In 2007 we saw a variety of containers used by customers to take their fruit home.  The most unique (and smart!) idea was medium sized coolers.  Use your imagination to re-purpose whatever containers you already own.

People also hauled home their berries and cherries in:

We are planning to extend Saskatoon Picking until Sunday, July 27.

There will be reduced hours Thursday, through Sunday,
    (July 24-July 27).  (see below)

The mosquitos are friendly.

I found a great new recipe for Saskatoon Pudding Cake.  It was a little too sweet for us, next time we'll reduce the sugar to half a cup in the cake portion and to one-quarter cup in the topping portion.  This recipe was quick, easy and oh-so-delicious!

Due to a crop failure, we will NOT be picking any cherries in 2008.

July 17, 2008

We anticipate Peak Saskatoon Picking to be Saturday, July 19 through Tuesday, July 22.

The showery weather is a challenge so Please, remember to call the farm just before you head out.  We've already had to alter our hours due to rain and the July 17 morning forecast is predicting 4 days of unsettled conditions.

The mosquitos are friendly and if we get any rain at all, come prepared for muddy shoes.

We will NOT be taking any more orders for pre-picked Saskatoon berries.

Due to a crop failure, we will NOT be picking any cherries in 2008.

July 15, 2008

We will open at 8:00am, Wednesday, July 16 for the start of Saskatoon picking.  Depending on the weather!  Please remember to call the farm just before you head out.

The berries are just starting to ripen and you'll have to walk to several bushes to get a full pail.  We're guess-timating it won't be until Sunday, July 20 or Monday, July 21, before you'll be able to fill a pail or two from a single bush.

July 10, 2008

Wednesday, July 16 is our best guess-ti-mate for the start of Saskatoon picking.  Depending on the weather!

The cherries are still green on July 10, so we're guess-timating an August pick for cherries this year.

June 26, 2008

Picking will begin no earlier than July 10, 2008

July 10 is our best guess-ti-mate at this time.  As long as we don't get hail or develop an entomosporium outbreak, (see the 2005 page for that ugly scenario) we should be good to go.

As July 10th approaches, we will be updating the answering machine daily at approximately 10pm.  If you don't check between July 8 and 17, you might miss the Saskatoon Season completely.

Despite the very cold and wet weather, we had an excellent, albeit late, bloom and very few forest tent caterpillars.  The Saskatoons didn't bloom until May 31, so they were about 2 weeks late.  There are a lot of developing berries and we were able to spray fungicide to combat entomosporium.  Fingers Crossed.

Spring 2008

The Manitoba Maple flower buds broke on April 30, 2008.  Here's how the next few months will play out, depending on the weather.

  • Mid-May: Fruit Tree Blossoms.
  • July:  approximately 1 week of picking Saskatoons.
  • July:  approximately 2 weeks of picking Cherries.

Three to seven days before picking starts is when we'll know the exact start date.  It could be as early as July 3rd, or, as late as July 20th.  It all depends on the weather.

See the Picking Information page for more details on the picking season and our farm amenities.
