Page Heading Graphic - Farm Information Page

Welcome

About us

We are a small, family-run farm and orchard.  We grow Saskatoons and Cherries for fresh picking.  Lloyd Jensen is our Farmer, and I'm the Webmaster (Sue Werner).  Our U-Pick Manager is our daughter, Jenn.

We're about a 20 minute drive north from the Perimeter Highway which surrounds the City of Winnipeg, in Manitoba, Canada.

Lloyd and I started planting saskatoon seedlings in 1996, as a small experiment.  We discovered that we really enjoyed playing in the dirt and ended up planting 5,000 saskatoons, 50 Evans Cherries and about 200 landscaping and shelter trees of different varieties.

Current Status -or- "Are you picking now?"

During the summer, the current status of the farm operation is described on our Current Status page.  This is the one page most often updated on this website.  I usually update in the spring, when we start picking Saskatoons, when we start picking cherries and when all picking is finished.

About our fruit

Saskatoons are thorn-less bushes that grow to 4-5 metres (12-15 feet) high.  To learn more about our Saskatoon varieties, what we do with them, how to preserve them and to find some recipies, click on the S'toons link to the left.  To see some pictures, click on the Photos link to the left.

Our Evans Cherry trees also grow to 4-5 metres (12-15 feet) high.  They are referred to as "Pie" or "sour" cherries.  To learn more about the Evans Cherry, how to pit them, what we do with them, how to preserve them and to find some recipies, click on the Cherries link to the left.   To see some pictures, click on the Photos link to the left.

We do NOT grow strawberries or raspberries.  Please see ourF.A.Q.page for other Frequently Asked Questions information.

Our priority is our U-Pick customer.

About our U-Pick Operation

Our U-Pick first opened in 2000, when we began harvesting Saskatoons.  We started harvesting cherries in 2003 and compost in 2007.

We truly enjoy meeting all of the different people that come out to our farm.  We've learned a lot from some of our experienced pickers and enjoy introducing novice pickers to this prairie experience.

See the Picking Information page for more details on the picking season and our farm amenities.

The U-Pick season usually begins the first week of July and runs until the cherries are finished.

Go to our Current Status page to see how the picking season is developing this year.

Usually the Saskatoons start sometime during the first week of July and last for 7 to 14 days.

The cherries are usually ready just after the saskatoons are finished.  This can vary wildly, depending upon the weather.  For example, in 2006 we were picking cherries a month ahead of time!

If you want to be sure to have some saskatoons and/or cherries, start monitoring our Current Status page at the end of June.

If you're interested in what the picking seasons were like in previous years, there are archived Current Status pages from previous years at the bottom of that page.

You will find the "call the farm first" line [as seen below] scattered throughout this site.  This is a reminder to always call the farm before heading out here to ensure that we are open.  More information is on the Picking Information page.
